Food Distribution, Food Boxes (For Seniors/Elderly) available at Food Bank for Monterey County

SENIOR FOOD BAG PROGRAM

Senior Food Bag (SFB) Program is a ten-month (Feb.-Nov.) program designed to provide seniors 60 years of age and older with fresh produce and bread. Distributions occur twice monthly. This program is also supported by volunteers who pack, distribute and deliver the bags to homebound seniors who cannot reach distribution sites. This year, more than1,350 senior households received food at 29 distribution sites throughout Monterey County.

The Food Bank for Monterey County originally formed a partnership with the Salinas Meals on Wheels to provide Senior Food Bags to South County residents. In July 1999, this partnership was extended to begin providing a breakfast program to 70 senior households in South County. At present, the number of households served has doubled. This collaboration continues and Meals on Wheels is an official member of our Agency Clearinghouse.

As factors such as the higher cost of living and legislative cuts take their toll, the challenges of reaching and providing much needed food assistance to senior members of our community will become more difficult. Donations to this program will become especially important.
