2005-2007: Gulf Coast hurricane response & recovery
Initial response: Medical Teams International sent staff and volunteers to the New Orleans Convention Center to provide medical care and logistical support.
We also set up a temporary medical clinic in Moss Point, Miss. and deployed volunteer nurses to Biloxi, Miss. to provide back-up support to overworked hospital staff.
As we established partnerships with local churches, shelters and organizations, we sent more volunteer medical teams, health supplies and financial support to the field.
Mobile health van: One of our Mobile Dental vans, temporarily re-designated as a medical unit, worked with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, traveling throughout the Baton Rouge area to administer immunizations to 1,500 people. It relocated to Utica, Miss., when Hurricane Rita struck and served in Lafayette, La., as a mobile pharmacy.
Medical Teams International:
committed more than $6.9 million for disaster relief/reconstruction in the Gulf Coast.
provided nearly $900,000 in medical supplies, hygiene products and household items to shelters, churches and schools.
paid $28,000 to fund a mobile medical van that traveled to resettlement areas and FEMA trailer communities near Baton Rouge and $10,300 in flu vaccines to stock it.
distributed toys, cleaning supplies and hygiene products to children and their families in La. and Miss. in December 2005.
provided reconstruction assistance for 123 families in Miss. allowing them to move back home for the first time since August of 2005.
provided funding to reconstruct more than 200 roofs in Moss Point, Miss.
assisted more than 63 families in New Orleans, La. with demolition/debris removal in their homes.
provided funding for Just the Right Attitude (JTRA), a ministry in New Orleans-East that served 58,900 hot meals to families.
sent trauma counselors to train 150 parents, teachers, counselors and pastors to work with their community effectively.
sent 30 volunteer teams to the Gulf Coast in 2007.
deployed a total of 490 volunteers to the Gulf Coast since Katrina struck on August 29, 2005.
Current focus
Louisiana: Reconstruction
This year, we will send 100 volunteers on 12 teams to reconstruct 20 homes. Volunteer teams will work with our local partner, Vineyard Mercy Response to provide reconstruction assistance to families in the Gentilly area.
*We are currently recruiting Gulf Coast volunteers skilled in home reconstruction. We are not able to place unskilled workers on reconstruction teams.
