WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Cerebral palsy, hydrocephalus, profound autism, severe vision impairment, and other complex disabilities were burden enough for twenty-three children found in 1993 living in "The Room for Abandoned Children" at Port-au-Prince General Hospital. Their misery was made worse by broken cribs, filth, and lack of attention, treatment, and care.

Gladys Syvlestre Thomas could not walk away from these children as others had. Fondation Pour Les Enfant's d'Haiti rescued them, taking them to a house rented for their care. Since then additional abandoned, handicapped children have joined them; and together they were moved to the first building constructed at Children's Village of Hope. Here they continue to be nurtured with love and dignity receiving the emotional support and intellectual stimulation needed by all children.

Each child has a properly fitted, functioning wheelchair and access to a breeze-swept, shaded porch. Those who are able are encouraged to interact with each other in rooms built to accommodate their needs. A dedicated Momma lives in each sleeping room and pays particular attention to her half dozen children making it as much like a family home as possible. Their special love and dedication to these children is genuine and apparent.
