notes: 8/23/08 LTel - Spoke to Survivor by phone: Please note that email contact is hit and miss as power has only recently been fully restored to her neighborhood and often times they have short outages. Keep trying if emails bounce back because the email is good, it just doesn't always receive because of the electrical issues. This family, besides facing the challenges of restoring their Autistic daughters life to her vital normalcy has experienced a great deal of struggle with their FEMA claim (that is currently being appealed), as well as technical errors in her application to SBA. The FEMA inspector minimized and lied on the forms and they only received $700 from FEMA and had to use most of it to hire an attorney. The inspector stated that they were "renters and had an insurance policy" which was inaccurate. They've been homeowners for 17 yrs. in this house and provided FEMA proof of title that was notarized as well their original title papers. After weeks of requesting a two sentence letter from Allstate Insurance advising that they had in fact cancelled their flood policy many years prior (they had to choose between taking care of her stroke disabled father and the policy so of course Dad won), apparently none of that was "good enough", ergo the need to spend over $400 on an attorney to assist them in the matter. So that part is now taken care of, but SBA denied them because 8 days prior to the flood, her purse was stolen in broad daylight at a grocery store. Her bank was under 8 foot of water and in the meantime, the robbers cleaned her out and ruined her credit. So from the SBA perspective, she is too high risk. The problem get's more complex because SBA did deny, but did not use the proper code (They used an approved code but put $0.00 in the amount for the award) and she calls on a nearly daily basis but after 4 weeks of pleading with them to change it so that she can properly appeal FEMA, no cooperation. In the 2.5 mos. since the flood, Jamie has really gone downhill and is regressing. Many people don't realize how important consistency and rituals and certain items are to the existence of an Autistic child. The items listed below, according to FEMA are considered 'luxury' items. This of course is a misconception. These are all tools to not just her survival, but her means to thrive and grow and improve everyday. Her mom has gone to Washington and is the Ambassador for Autism and has written grants, legislation and gone to hearings on Autism to fight for people's rights with this disease. She is also struggling to take care of her disabled elderly father and has her own serious health concerns and this has just been more than enough stress and strain on the family, so my hope is that there are generous donor's out there that will be able to assist in taking some of the strain off of this family and help Jamie get back to normalcy. She's beginning to have symptoms not seen in many years. They were forced to move back into their home 4 days post flood, and there is a good 3 foot of black mold in the basement. It has been mucked out by generous volunteers, but this family and this house has a long way to go to get to the recovered stage and it's a very dangerous place to live in and detrimental to all of their health. There home is on the LAST block of the 500 year flood zone. In all of this the saddest part of this is that our 10 year old daughter with early infantile autism lost most of her much needed items she needs to thrive and her bedroom/storm room, and many of these items she has prescriptions for such as: 2 computers with wireless connections for cable internet (we lost 3 computers with autism things, 2 printers, 1 scanner, 1 set of speakers, etc. and desk with computer chair) We use one computer for research and Jamies guided imagery, frequency delivery etc for her autism. The second computer is for Jamie to use for her programs learning, for her intergration, and so on. refrigerator AC-DC (coleman power chill) 40- quart thermoelectric cooler with power supply). This for Van/jeep (this is for her special diet etc) when not in use she has it in the basement for her bedroom/storm room. This is on the opposite side of our family room 20 - 22 inch TV and TV stand VHS- DVD recorder for Jamie's disney movies... autism children think in movies and reason using stories. She uses the recorder to tape the movies she likes for her portable dvd for travel which also was lost. Disney movies 2 book shelves we use to keep Jamie from running circles through the basement it cuts off half the basement and stops the need to circle. 4 shelves of autism activities books such as autism social activities, autism sensory integration, and so on... Merck manual, and many other reference books I use for research for Jamie. Children, and learning books Best Buy has the educational software set we had for Jamies special educational program I helped design for her to thrive at her speed of learning. This software is not age limited. It is a series in one box something like kinder garden to 6 and 6 to 12th it is both sets. Some of Jamie's educational levels is in 8th grade and they hope after this year in 9-10th.... Last year she made the gifted childs list.... Stereo (CD- Mp3) Portable DVD player for traveling... this is for long trips and for out of town trips to doctors appointments. Weather radio ( it must have weather - TV- FM - AM (Jamie uses this to track storms so she feels safe when lights go out) This is Jamie's fear each child with autism has one this is Jamie's. She knows the difference in radios.... Jamie can sometimes be found hiding in the school bathroom when a hard storm lightening hits close. For Jamie's storm area we also lost a small child's wooden storage bench we keep the weather radio, small pillow blanket and cushion, all was lost. This is Jamie's safety zone when the basement is not enough. Twin Bed with head board and side stand Tall dresser toy box and toys it was filled with Jamie's sensory and learning toys. 4 shelves of Autism books DW and Arthur interactive computerized talking and learning toys. rocking chair glider (for sensory) Sensory blankets and pillows (the really soft feeling these are her favorite.) Misc stuffed animals TY are her favorite as of the feeling of the fur. In essence she lost her carpet, her paneling, her insulation in that room and lamp. She lost all she knew as comfortable and what made her thrive she lost so much more but this is all I can seem to think of for the moment.
