Prison Book Program provides prisoners with free reading materials. With prisoners isolated in facilities that have chronically insufficient educational opportunities, we provide these materials to improve the lives and communities of prisoners to greatly reduce the likelihood of their return to the prison system.

What is the Prison Book Program?

We are a grassroots organization that exists for one purpose - to send free books to prisoners. We've been doing it since 1972.

Why send free books to prisoners?

Books are crucial to the political, spiritual and educational development of all people. Ray Champagne, a prisoner in Shirley, MA says "I believe that books (education) are the ONLY vehicle to change whether in or out of prison. I would be lost without books and folks to send them." Education is a powerful tool that greatly reduces the chances of inmates returning to the prison system after their release. Prison educational programs have been drastically cut and most prisoners cannot afford to buy their own books. Most prisons do not allow family and friends to send books into prisons; they must come from a bookstore or publisher. That's where we step in to help. (We are affiliated with the Lucy Parsons Bookstore.)

Books We Need for Prisoners - Paperbacks

Donations must be in good condition. Typically, books that are over 25 years old cannot be used, as they are often outdated or in poor condition.

We can use most non-fiction and fiction in new or very good condition.

The following subjects and genres are in constant demand:

African-American studies
The Autobiography of Malcolm X and works about or by Martin Luther King, Jr.
Native American studies
Mexican, Aztec, and Mayan studies
Puerto Rican studies
English dictionaries, thesauruses, and foreign language dictionaries
GED Prep
Spanish/English dictionaries and books in Spanish
How to start a small business.
Jailhouse lawyer legal materials
Health especially HIV and Hepatitis C
Gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender studies
Trades (i.e. woodworking, automotive, etc.)
Spirituality & Religion - especially Bible concordances & dictionaries, Islam and non-mainstream religions such as Wicca, Paganism, Buddhism, New Age, etc.

Bookstore gift certificates to help purchase hard-to-find titles are gratefully accepted! We are a non-profit organization with 501(c) 3 status, so your donations are fully tax-deductible.

Where To Bring Donations

Book donations can be dropped off at the PBP office in the basement of the United First Parish Church in Quincy Center during our normal volunteer hours. Because of space limitations, please contact us if you are bringing more than six boxes (617-423-3298 or info@prisonbookprogram.org). We have a very limited availability to pick up donations; please contact us for more details.
