While many have expressed reservation about rebuilding in a flood zone, it is important to remember that all of Hancock County is part of this flood zone. The only hurricane other than Katrina to flood this part of the country with such force was Camille in 1969. Camille only brought 2 feet of water into town; Katrina brought 20. Prior to Camille, no comparable disaster had been recorded for nearly 200 years. Furthermore, it appears that few, if any, state funds will be allocated for residents in flood zones in Mississippi. While Louisiana will serve this segment of the population because of the external and internal pressure to rebuild New Orleans, which sits 9 feet below sea level, no such forces exist to serve the people of Mississippi. Pearlington, which is an average of 6.5 feet above sea level, will likely get no public funding to rebuild. One House at a Time is currently seeking $500,000 to insure that it can continue to build homes in Pearlington for the next year. While the ultimate goal is to raise $2 Million to build 200 homes, the first step is raising funds for the next year.
