Assistance depends on the resources available, and each organization has different eligibility requirements. Clients are highly encouraged to utilize New York City’s food pantries or soup kitchens if other programs fail to help. For first time visitors, no eligibility requirements or applications are necessary to receive food from food pantries or soup kitchens. A client who chooses to use these services should be aware that each site offers different hours of distribution and may impose guidelines after the first visit. If a client choices to use a food pantry, it is suggested that they call ahead and show up as early as possible to ensure there are still supplies available. The Food Bank does not provide food directly to individuals, but through its network of food pantries and soup kitchens. Their website hosts a search engine that shows food distribution sites in relation to the client’s address. Food Bank also pre-screens for food stamps and provides information on other food programs. It is important to know that food provided by Food Bank sites must be used to help those here in New York City, and not be sent overseas. mission: -> OVERVIEW The purpose of this New York City Haiti Earthquake Assistance Guide is to provide information about relief services available to those impacted by the January 2010 Haiti earthquake. It is arranged in sections based the types of services provided by different non-profit organizations and governmental agencies. Each listing includes basic information on the available services, how the agency providing the service can be contacted, and eligibility requirements when applicable. Although these agencies offer numerous ongoing services, some of their programs are offered only during emergencies, and they depend on resources with limited availability. The inclusion of an organization in this guide does not guarantee access to its services nor is it an endorsement of the organization. Most services are free, but resources designated with ($) are not free; the client may have to pay for the item or service. Updates for this guide are ongoing, and additional information on assistance, services, and programs will be provided with each edition. An updated version of this guide is scheduled for April.
