There are over 50,000 known dead and thousands of injured. Here in Kentucky we are partnering with the Capital City Christian Church from Frankfort, Ky. to help those affected by this disaster. The church has been doing mission work in Haiti for a long time and they had thirteen missionaries stranded in Haiti after the quake. Today I spoke with Doug Eads from the church and he told me about three missions they were working with, and in these early stages of the disaster we have chosen to help them. With such a large disaster it is hard to decide what you can do to help, a local parent volunteer and Whitley North Elementary has given us some direction. We are challenging all of the local schools, churches, and businesses to see who can raise the most supplies to help those children affected by this disaster. "It’s a terrible thing. It’s just a tragedy," said Whitley County Sheriff Colan Harrell, who has known Paul since he was a young child. The cause of death is currently undetermined but no foul play is suspected, Harrell said. Paul was found dead at his home about 7:20 p.m. Deputy Shawn Jackson and the Whitley County Coroner’s Office is investigating. Paul served as Whitley County Coroner for about two years after the death of his father, Carl Paul, about a decade ago. In addition to his work as a funeral home director, Paul was also founder of the Ken-Tenn Relief Team, which was formed after Hurricane Katrina. Rain totals in some areas were greater than 17 inches and the Cumberland River crested at nearly 52 feet, a level not seen since 1937, before the Army Core of Engineers and the Tennessee Valley Authority established flood control measures in the area. I received the above information from a Presbyterian Disaster Relief news letter this weekend. We are in the process of putting together a load of supplies that have already been donated and we will deliver them to Nashville next week. Last week, the organization delivered two truckloads of water and one truckload of food and supplies to hard-hit communities where flooding occurred. This week they will be delivering more to the Floyd County communities, Garrett and Waylon, and to Jackson in Breathitt County, where the fire department will help the National Guard distribute supplies to families who are in most need.
