mission: Community Action Committee of Danbury, Inc. (CACD) is a non-profit organization that offers a myriad of services to low-income families and individuals. The agency’s major source of funds is Federal, State, and local grants. CACD also receives sources of funds from private grants to supplement federal and state funding. As part of the national network of Community Action Agencies, CACD has a long history of helping low-income families and individuals overcome poverty and improve self-sufficiency. CACD was established in 1967 and has been providing service to the low-income people for more that forty years. The agency typically serves over 14,000 individuals on a yearly basis. CACD serves 19 towns in Northern Fairfield and Litchfield Counties in Connecticut. Most of its client base comes from the eight towns that comprise of the Greater Danbury area (Bethel, Brookfield, Danbury, New Fairfield, New Milford, Newtown, Redding, and Ridgefield). Nearly 90% of the population within the service delivery area lives in the eight towns that comprise of the Greater Danbury Area. The Towns in the Northern part of the territory are smaller and the populations are more widely dispersed. None of these towns has a population exceeding 10,000. Clients obtain access to services at CACD’s Danbury office, the Early Childcare Center, or the Hispanic Center of greater Danbury, Association of Religious Communities, and Danbury Youth Services. Clients in Towns outside Danbury locations clients obtain services through town social workers or municipal agents. CACD’s major programs include: Energy Assistance a program that helps low-income people pay their heating bills; Action Early Learning Center, a NAEYC-accredited early childcare center that serves 125 children from low-income families; Neighborhood Services, is a group of programs that helps people in crisis situations such as Housing Mediation, Eviction Foreclosure Prevention Program, Diaper Program, Food Pantry, and FEMA – Utilities and rental assistance; Individual Development Accounts(IDA) that provides matching funds to eligible clients for the purchase of a first home, opening a small business, and pursuit of a higher education; our VITA income tax program continued to grow in 2010 over 100% and returned over $150,000 in the Earner Income Tax Credit to community citizens; other financial literacy programs include Money Matters and Smart Money. DSS Security Deposit Guarantee Program (SDGP) Income Tax Preparation Assistance - Provides free income tax preparation and the option of free electronic filing for individuals and families meeting the program's elgibility requirements. Individual Development Accounts (IDAs)- Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) are matched savings accounts that enable low–income American families to save, build assets and enter the financial mainstream. Money Matters - Money Matters’ classes are held in the evening and provide information to attendees to help them better understand their incomes and spending habits, determine what spending is essential to maintain their homes and families, discover discretionary spending habits that are hindering their abilities to keep up with essentials and learn to develop and implement a budget to guide their spending and savings’ efforts.
