The Sugar Loaf Fire Protection District is located approximately 7 miles west of Boulder, Colorado, and includes parts of CO Highway 119, Sugar Loaf Road and Magnolia Road.
The District encompasses 17 square miles and ranges in elevation from 6,000 to 8,500 feet above sea level. The SLFPD includes approximately 500 homes, a water treatment plant for the city of Boulder, Boulder County Open Space, City of Boulder Mountain Parks, and several thousand of acres of Arapahoe-Roosevelt National Forest.
The SLFPD is served by an all volunteer department, which usually varies between 30 and 40 members. We typically respond to about 110 calls each year, 2/3 of which are medical in nature, and 1/3 of which are more traditional fire calls.
In July of 1989, the Black Tiger Fire burned through part of the District, one of the state's first large urban-interface fires. Within 5 hours, the Black Tiger fire consumed 44 structures and 2,100 acres of forest. An NFPA case study of the Black Tiger fire is available here (7mb).
