FROM THE ALIMA SITE 10/25/10:
Haiti: Alima is mobilizing to respond to the epidemic of cholera
A cholera epidemic is causing dozens of deaths in Haiti in recent days. Victims suffer from diarrhea and dehydration very fast, symptoms of cholera. The deaths of patients can respond very quickly, just hours after the onset of symptoms. Yet, clinically, the disease is easy to treat, simply rehydrate the patient for two to three days.
For Haiti, it is the most serious health alert since the earthquake of January 12. The disease has already killed 253 on 3000 cases were identified by the Haitian authorities. The epidemic broke out in central Haiti, in the Artibonite and Central Plateau, where many refugees are survivors of the earthquake of January 12.
This epidemic may spread significantly to the rest of the country, especially in large overcrowded camps in the capital, where the earthquake nine months ago has made 1.5 million homeless, in addition to more than 250,000 dead. The situation of people in Port-au-Prince remains precarious, particularly in terms of habitat quality and hygienic conditions.
An emergency medical response to cope with the spread
The analysis of living conditions in these camps (quantity and quality of available water, sanitation systems and waste treatment, housing density) suggests that if the epidemic could spread it 's expect a peak of the epidemic particularly intense and fast.
ALIMA - present in Haiti since the earthquake of January 12, 2010 - is preparing a medical response to cope with the possible spread of the epidemic in Port au Prince. At this stage Alima studying the various possibilities for intervention under the coordination of the Haitian Government, which oversees the medical response to this epidemic.
This assessment work is undertaken locally by the President of Alima, Thierry Allafort Duverger and program manager, William Duke. This first team will be strengthened by the middle of this week with the arrival of a coordinator and several additional nurses and logisticians.
