mission: I wanted to let you know about our Sand Mountain “Long Term Recovery Committee” (LTRC) for storm victims in Jackson and Dekalb Counties. The LTRC consists of Sand Mtn Baptist Association, The Upper Sand Mtn Parish, Dekalb Baptist Association, Jackson & Dekalb Salvation Army, Jackson & Dekalb Red Cross, Jackson & Dekalb EMA, Jackson & Dekalb DHR, other community agencies, some local pastors, and a regional FEMA representative. We formed a similar committee in 2008, after the Pisgah/Rosalie tornado, and again in 2009, after the Macedonia/Powell/Sylvania tornado. This time the damage is much more widespread, and the needs are much greater, but our purpose is the same as before, which is to help storm victims with repairs and rebuilding. It is great to see agencies from our two counties and various religious denominations sitting down at one table, working together to help families in our communities. Our LTRC meets weekly to assess needs and resources. We meet at 1:00pm, at Northeast AL Community College, room 110 in the Health Education building. Here is how the process works: Volunteer case workers from our area are being assigned to each community. They meet with storm victims to assess their unmet needs. Then the case workers will present those needs to the LTRC. Then based on the availability of funds and volunteer labor, we will help the families as much as possible. Storm victims can call 256-638-2126 or go by The Upper Sand Mtn Parrish in Sylvania, to start a case and request a case worker.
