We are working day and night and have not had time to work on the web site… Dan Conaway and Gary were scheduled to be in Honduras this week. Often while on the way to a disaster we are diverted in route to another disaster or problem. It is hard to imagine that Rescue Task Force is right here at home serving our neighbors and supporters. The work that RTF is doing here in San Diego County is what we often do in far off and distant lands. But instead of burros, vintage helicopters and dug-out canoes this time we have incredible resources. The days are busy delivering relief supplies to fire victims and then during the nights we deliver supplies to collection centers for the next morning’s distributions. Chrysler Foundation, and Chrysler Financial have donated $200,000 to RTF to assist us in assisting victims and effected communities. They also loaned us and 18 wheeler semi-truck that has been hauling bulk relief supplies to Barret Junction Café in East County. Not all projects are measured in Tons. On the first day of the fire a lady lost her special sized wheelchair. RTF ordered and purchased a replacement and delivered exactly what she needed. RTF volunteers using pick-up trucks, their own and trucks loaned by Chrysler, have transported hundreds of bales of hay to displaced horses around the county. To assist families we are purchasing food packs and clean-up tools. Each tool pack of wheelbarrow, heavy and hand tools, shovels, rakes, gloves, knee-pads, industrial trash bags, buckets, and all of the items from lessons we learned during the Cedar fires, cost about $350.00 each. The Home Depot stores are providing great assistance to our teams: We call fax orders to them and their staff assembles the orders for pick up by our teams. To support communities we have given Potrero Elementary School $25,000 and we have given courageous Volunteer Fire Fighters at Deerhorn Volunteer Fire Station and Intermountain Volunteers Fire Department a total of $50,000. More is needed. Wednesday night we were in the Mountains east of Ramona where the Witch Fire originated delivering relief supplies to families who had been burned out. At one smoldering site we pulled up to, the owner looked at our caravan of trucks and vans; declined any help - but he knew of neighbors who ‘need the help more’. One of the volunteers asked him if he couldn’t use a wheelbarrow though? “Well, yes I sure could use a wheelbarrow”. As we called off the items in the “kits” he said; ‘ well, yes I could use one of those…’ very modest and more concerned about his neighbors than himself. One lady burst out in a great big smile and thanked us profusely for the gloves in her kit. She showed us her hands, torn by working through the rubble of what had been her home. Our sincerest gratitude to so many who have donated so much – you are living proof that ‘America is great because Americans are good.’ Around the world, Around the Clock Rescue Task Force is reaching out and touching Lives… and Hurting Hearts.
