About Us

Housing Consumer Education Centers offer answers to a wide range of questions about all types of housing problems. Tenants, landlords, prospective buyers, and homeowers can access information designed to maximize housing stability, strengthen investments, and minimize disputes.

Each of the nine member agencies of the statewide Massachusetts Nonprofit Housing Association acts as the Housing Consumer Education Center for its region. These agencies offer housing assistance, services, and information to low- and moderate-income residents of Massachusetts including:

* Administering more than 15,000 federal and state rental subsidies;
Developing affordable rental, homeownership, and transitional housing opportunities;
* Identifying public/private rehabilitation resources for homeowners and landlords;
* Educating buyers and owners on purchasing and maintaining a home;
Working with property owners and managers to promote successful and long-term tenancies;
* Providing transitional housing and support services to those at risk of homelessness or presently in shelters;
* Partnering with communities, lenders, and government agencies to develop local affordable housing opportunities.

Residential Assistance for Families in Transition (RAFT) Program www.masshousinginfo.org/agencies 1-800-224-5124 to find the local housing agency

RAFT is a state-funded homelessness prevention program. RAFT helps families who are behind on rent, mortgage payments, or utility bills. RAFT also helps families who have to move but do not have enough money to pay a security deposit, utility startup costs, or first/last month’s rent. Families can get up to $3000. Funding is limited. Not all eligible families get help. The Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development oversees the RAFT program. On the local level, RAFT is run by regional nonprofit housing agencies.

This organization is also a clearinghouse for info about the different housing agencies in each region. If someone needs a housing referral, this is a great place to start. Ask them which housing agency is appropriate for the person you are trying to serve.
