Once again, the fires have taken their toll in Southern California. In Rancho Palos Verdes, a quick-moving brush fire was reported at about 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 27.
By 11 p.m., the wildfire had burned about 75 acres (roughly 3.3 million square feet), specifically the areas around Portuguese Bend Road and Crest Road. Although the Los Angeles County Fire Department does not know how many structures have been lost to the fire, it is clear that at least three buildings have burned down.
At 11:20 p.m., the firefighters began mandatory evacuation of residential areas around Portuguese Bend, Pinto Road, Crest Road, and Amber Sky Drive. According to ABC News, the Red Cross set up an evacuation center at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. An animal center has also been set up at Ernie J. Howlett Park, which is located at 2581 Crenshaw Boulevard. No injuries have been reported.
The fire itself started in the northern stretch of Forrestal Drive, which is located near the Trump National Golf Course. This area was originally designated as a nature preserve, and so no trimming of vegetation took place. This, combined with the low humidity, intensified the situation. Fortunately, the area around Forrestal Drive is a known slide area, and the city of Rancho Palos Verdes restricted building around the reserve.
NBC News reports that there are four Southern California brush fires, including the La Canada Flintridge, Morris Dam and Hemet fires. ABC News reports that the worst ones are the Rancho Palos Verdes and La Canada Flintridge fires.
