Mission: To develop and implement an evidence-based curriculum, adaptable to clinical and training use wherever babies are born.

Helping Babies Breathe is a neonatal resuscitation curriculum for resource-limited circumstances. It was developed on the premise that assessment at birth and simple newborn care are things that every baby deserves. The initial steps taught in HBB can save lives and give a much better start to many babies who struggle to breathe at birth. The focus is to meet the needs of every baby born.

Helping Babies Breathe is an initiative of the American Academy of Pediatrics and many partners, including the US Agency for International Development (USAID), The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), and Saving Newborn Lives/Save the Children. The curriculum was developed with input from the World Health Organization (WHO). All this is made possible by an unrestricted educational grant from the Laerdal Foundation for Acute Medicine, and support from Latter-day Saint Charities.

Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) was developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the WHO to teach newborn resuscitation in resource limited countries around the world. Utilizing the Cap Haitien Health Network and through sponsorship by Florida Hospital Health Systems we are having our first teaching session June 16 at the Hotel Christophe in Cap Haitien. The session will be teaching anyone who attends deliveries how to resuscitate a newborn infant who isn't breathing. We will give registration preferance to those who can return to their community and teach others the program.

There is NO COST for the program and all supplies needed and lunch will be provided. At this time we are planning on having this first program in English (but future sessions, currently planned for Fall 2011, will be in Kreyol/French according to need).

This program requires individualized instruction, so there will only be 10 spaces available for the session in June.
